Climate Heating in New England More Rapidly Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Study Finds.
The US region known for its colonial history, sweet syrup and frigid, snow-bound winters is experiencing a dramatic change. New research finds that New England is heating up faster than nearly any other place on the globe.
Unprecedented Pace of Change
The velocity of warming in New England makes it the fastest-heating area of the contiguous United States, according to the research. The rate of its temperature rise has reportedly increased significantly in the last half-decade.
"The temperature is not only rising, it's speeding up," stated a primary researcher on the study. "It's really accelerated in the past few years, which was unexpected to me. Our climate is moving in a new direction, after being relatively stable for millennia."
The analysis places the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming areas in the world, together with the polar region and parts of Europe and China. "The region is now heading towards being like the south-eastern US," the researcher added.
Analysis Approach and Results
For the analysis, researchers examined three datasets on day and night temperatures and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis covered the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They discovered that New England has warmed by an average of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the global average, with the planet warming by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the comparable timeframe.
"That is very fast warming, which is concerning," said the study author.
Notable Warming Trends
- Minimum temperatures are rising more quickly than daytime temperatures.
- Winters are heating up at double the speed of other seasons.
- The harsh winter chill characteristic of the region is being reduced.
Oceanic Influences and the "Energy Storage"
A major cause for this exceptional build-up of heat may be changes in the Atlantic Ocean. The global seas are absorbing more than 90% of the surplus thermal energy trapped by greenhouse gases.
In the north Atlantic, an influx of cold, fresh water from Arctic ice melt is disrupting the Gulf Stream. This is directing warmer water into the Gulf of Maine, concentrating heat along the coastline that is then pushed inland by prevailing winds.
"Surplus thermal energy from climate change is being held in the oceans like a huge battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the air and New England is a receiver of that heat."
Impacts on Culture and Extremes
Once considered a relatively stable region, New England has experienced extreme weather shocks in the past decade, including devastating floods and prolonged dry spells.
The increasing temperatures endangers cherished aspects of local culture:
- Syrup production is being affected by shifting seasonal patterns.
- Cold-weather activities are impacted; an ice hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been called off or moved multiple times due to unsafe ice conditions.
- Winter tourism have faced difficulties because of inadequate snow.
"I live just outside Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the local ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That tradition has largely vanished from large parts of the southern part of the region."
