"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "I wanted to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There is only one problem: I also desires to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. A host of celebrated admirers have also petitioned for the honor.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a close unit. Their videos repeatedly show them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you inevitably think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to form a group."

"Therefore all are welcome to be the honorary Haim sister."

Grammy Nod

The trio are speaking from their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The words detail endings and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they want to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice ignoring the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed resilience demanded a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal tales.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

Yet Haim will consistently be their primary commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still making music."
