News has broken that fan-favorite stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are returning to their iconic characters in the newest chapter of the Hunger Games film series, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The film is currently in production.

An Important Comeback for the Franchise

Lawrence and Hutcherson are returning as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the characters they made famous. Speculation suggests their appearance will probably be featured in a future-set scene, considering the original saga concluded with their characters living in peace.

This represents the sixth cinematic outing in the global Hunger Games franchise.

Delving Into the Prequel

Sunrise on the Reaping is adapted from a 2025 novel by author Suzanne Collins. It will be the second prequel film after 2023's The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. For this project is Francis Lawrence, who directed the majority of the previous films in the series.

The film's events are set in the years leading up to the first Hunger Games, spotlighting a young Haymitch Abernathy. Haymitch, who would later become Katniss's mentor, is shown as a tribute in the deadly 50th Hunger Games.

The cast also includes several notable actors in key parts:

• Jesse Plemons will portray Plutarch Heavensbee.
• Ralph Fiennes is cast as a younger version of the menacing President Snow.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence has been nominated for a Golden Globe for the film Die My Love. Josh Hutcherson recently appeared in the successful franchise Five Nights at Freddy's 2.
