Miami Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Secure Initial Victories Following Player Detentions

NBA game action

Miami put up eighty-six first-half scores versus the Grizzlies

The Heat earned a crushing 146-114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their first basketball game since player Rozier was detained over alleged unlawful gambling.

Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested as part of a broad FBI investigation into illegal gambling. Both men contest the allegations.

However, the Heat were not distracted as they put up eighty-six first-half scores to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year existence.

Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and later stated Terry had the team's full backing.

"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother ultimately."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces the situation."

The Trail Blazers also won their initial match after the arrests, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' absence and leading the squad to a decisive 139-119 victory against the Golden State Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and how he coached," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."

League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events

Addressing the detentions for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the recent days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the fairness of the game," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

The commissioner further said an league probe into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the gambling firms," he continued.

"We then looked into that situation and were open about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.

"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.

"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. And, of course, what they announced yesterday was an indictment.

"And two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Terry.

"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and investigating."
